My Story
June Bug’s Puppies was founded by Arlene Long (me) 29 years ago in Nebraska. I had always loved dogs so it just seemed natural to begin breeding cairn terriers. So, shortly after becoming a veterinarian technician, I bought my first two dogs and that was it! I knew that this was what I was supposed to be doing. I loved the dogs, their personalities, their love and even their poop! Being around something with so much energy was invigorating!
It is important to me that I raise healthy puppies with a great temperament. I do this through responsible breeding and choosing only the best parents. My main focus is always on your puppies health, so I pay special attention to genetics to breed the best puppies. Also, I take extra time with them as they grow. I always remove dew-claws at a young age and play with them 2-3 times a day while they are in my care. I have found that the extra attention creates a puppy with a great personality that is healthy.
Throughout the years, I raised different breeds, from golden retrievers to wire foxes. Ultimately, though, the cairn terrier was my favorite, which is the only dog I breed now. I have 8 dogs now and have a few litters every year. But, ultimately, I just love my dogs!
Cairn Terriers
This breed has spunk (Remember Toto from the Wizard of Oz?)! They may be small in size, but they have a mighty spirit. They are a small dog (12-20 lbs & 10.5″ tall) and were originally bred to burrow and chase mice and rats. Now, they use all of that energy to play and love us! While they do have lots of energy, they can be happy in small spaces (as long as you give them a daily walk!).
Lucky for me, the cairn terrier has great hair and doesn’t require much grooming! They are extremely low shed dogs due to their two layers of hair, an undercoat to keep it warm and an outercoat to wick water (my dogs love to play in the snow!). They come in many different colors; black, brindle, cream, gray, silver, wheaten and even red!
Overall, the cairn terrier has very few health issues and I ensure to mitigate any issues through responsible breeding. I do offer a 60-day health guarantee on all of my puppies. This gives you a chance to take your new puppy to the vet and get it checked for any hereditary conditions.
